Socrates is considered as the father of Western thought. He is a central figure in the development of Western philosophy, though he left no written records of his teachings. Instead, his ideas and his dialectical method are primarily known through the writings of his students, particularly Plato. The impact of his life was all the greater because of the way in which it ended: he was brought to trial on charges of impiety and was sentenced to death by poisoning.
