Heritage contestation is not only a provocative research concept that enables interesting insights into different people’s identities, ideas, attitudes and uses of the Greek archaeological past across time and context. It is also a stimulus to follow changes in their perspectives, to subvert generalizing stereotypes about the homogeneity of Greek national culture, and also to explore polyphony and diversity, that is, the endless polysemy of a highly esteemed, frequently visited and widely promoted heritage.

Contested Antiquity tries to make sense of “difficult” archaeological heritage in Greece and, to a lesser extent, in Cyprus. By focusing on those uses of Greek antiquities long invoked in the name of Western values, which are not identified with the official constructions of the Greek past, the volume problematizes conflicting views about archaeological sites, monuments, landscapes, objects and practices in the two countries, from the late nineteenth century to the present.

Contributions combine intellectual history, archaeology, anthropology, cultural geography, museum and cultural studies and are written by Greek scholars who have shaped a new approach to Greek archaeological heritage analysis in the last two decades. Inspired by recent advances in social theory, contributors to Contested Antiquity not only explore the meaning and management of the ancient Greek past and its remains, but also make meaningful and thought-provoking statements regarding contemporary social and political issues in and about this area of the world.

Ο τόμος Contested Antiquity: Archaeological Heritage and Social Conflict in Modern Greece and Cyprus (Η αρχαιότητα υπό αμφισβήτηση: αρχαιολογική κληρονομιά και κοινωνικές συγκρούσεις στην Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο) διερευνά όψεις της «δύσκολης» αρχαιολογικής κληρονομιάς στην Ελλάδα και, σε μικρότερο βαθμό, στην Κύπρο. Εστιάζει στις χρήσεις εκείνες των ελληνικών αρχαιοτήτων που δεν ταυτίζονται με τις επίσημες κατασκευές του ελληνικού παρελθόντος και παρουσιάζει αντικρουόμενες προσλήψεις, αναπαραστάσεις και απόψεις για αρχαιολογικούς χώρους, μνημεία, τοπία, αντικείμενα και πρακτικές στις δύο χώρες, από τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα έως σήμερα.

Η έννοια της κοινωνικής σύγκρουσης αποτελεί ένα χρήσιμο και ενδιαφέρον αναλυτικό εργαλείο. Μας επιτρέπει να ανιχνεύσουμε αντιφατικές κοινωνικές μνήμες και ταυτότητες, θέτει σε αμφισβήτηση καθιερωμένες γενικεύσεις και στερεότυπα σχετικά με την ομοιογένεια του ελληνικού πολιτισμού, αρχαίου και σύγχρονου, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αναδεικνύει την πολυσημία και τις αντιφάσεις μιας εξαιρετικά προβεβλημένης πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς που εξακολουθεί να καθορίζει την οικονομική, ιδεολογική και πολιτισμική σχέση της Ελλάδας με τη Δύση.

Οι συμβολές στον τόμο συνδυάζουν θεματικές και μεθοδολογικά εργαλεία από ποικίλα γνωστικά πεδία: την αρχαιολογία, την ανθρωπολογία, την ιστορία, την κοινωνική γεωγραφία, τη μουσειολογία, την ιστορία της τέχνης και τις πολιτισμικές σπουδές. Γραμμένα από Έλληνες επιστήμονες που έχουν διαμορφώσει μια νέα προσέγγιση στην ανάλυση της αρχαιολογικής κληρονομιάς τις τελευταίες δύο δεκαετίες, τα κείμενα του βιβλίου καταλήγουν σε ενδιαφέροντα συμπεράσματα όσον αφορά την πρόσληψη και διαχείριση της αρχαιολογικής κληρονομιάς στην Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο, και προχωρούν σε σημαντικές διαπιστώσεις σχετικά με σύγχρονα κοινωνικά και πολιτικά ζητήματα στην περιοχή.
